About Wilbur Goode
Wilbur David Good (born September 28, 1885, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania) turned pro after his father's death in 1904, pitching for the independent Johnstown Johnnies as a left-handed, sidearm hurler before the New York Highlanders gave him a brief look in 1905. Cleveland acquired him late in 1908, and it was as a Nap in 1908-1909 that he appears in T206. Converted from the mound to the outfield to take advantage of his speed and pesky left-handed bat, Good bounced through six big-league clubs from 1905 to 1918 — the Highlanders, Naps, Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Doves, the Chicago Cubs (his longest stay, 1911-1915), the Phillies and the White Sox. His best campaign came with the 1914 Cubs, when he stole a team-leading 31 bases; he swiped 104 in the majors overall and hit .258 across 749 games. Nicknamed "Lefty" from his pitching days and later "Goody," he was never a Hall of Famer, but he thrived in the minors afterward — batting .335 lifetime there, belting 23 home runs for Kansas City in 1921 — and managed independent and minor-league teams into the 1940s. He died December 30, 1963. His T206 card is a common, affordable Cleveland Naps subject.
