About Ted Easterly
Theodore Harrison Easterly was a left-handed-hitting catcher whose road to the majors began on the California sandlots: after a troubled youth at the Whittier State Reform School, he was discovered by a sportswriter, played semipro ball around San Diego and Pasadena, and reached the Pacific Coast League's Los Angeles Angels in 1907. Cleveland bought his contract, and he broke in with the Naps in 1909, remaining through 1912 before finishing his American League days with the Chicago White Sox (1912-1913). A superb contact hitter, Easterly batted over .300 in three straight seasons (1910-1912), peaking around .323 in 1911, and led the AL in pinch-hits in 1912. In 1914 he jumped to the Federal League's Kansas City Packers, hitting .335 to finish third in the batting race, and closed his big-league career there in 1915. He retired with a .300 career average over seven seasons. Cy Young called Easterly his favorite catcher, and Easterly was behind the plate for Young's 500th career win in 1910. He appears in the T206 set as a Cleveland Naps subject. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
