About Jimmy Dygert
James Henry Dygert Jr. (1884-1936) was a right-handed pitcher who became the Philadelphia Athletics' first full-time spitballer. A Utica, New York, native, he pitched sandlot ball in the Utica Sunset League and turned pro in 1903, then dominated the Southern Association with the 1905 New Orleans Pelicans (18-4) before Connie Mack brought him to Philadelphia, where he debuted that September. Dygert spent his entire six-year major-league career (1905-1910) with the Athletics, throwing his spitter, curve, and fastball from an overhand delivery. His best year was 1907, when he went 21-8. On August 29, 1906, he combined with Rube Waddell on a rain-shortened five-inning no-hitter against the White Sox—counted as an official no-hitter for 85 years until a 1991 rules revision removed it. Plagued by control trouble and a September 1907 collapse against Detroit, he finished 57-49 with a 2.65 ERA and 583 strikeouts. He was on the 1910 pennant-winning A's but did not pitch in the World Series. A shoulder injury in 1911 effectively ended his career.
