About Paddy Livingstone
Patrick Joseph "Paddy" Livingston was a deadball-era catcher, born January 14, 1880, in Cleveland, Ohio. He came up off the Ohio semipro sandlots (a team in Kent led to his signing) and debuted with the 1901 Cleveland Blues in the American League's inaugural season. A light-hitting but capable defensive backstop, Livingston bounced through the minors (Wheeling, Indianapolis, Sioux City, Milwaukee) and saw big-league time with the Cincinnati Reds (1906) before landing with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics from 1909 to 1911. In Philadelphia he served as a backup catcher and handled the era's great arms - Chief Bender, Eddie Plank, Jack Coombs, and Cy Morgan - sharing in the A's back-to-back world championships of 1910 and 1911. He closed his career with Cleveland (1912) and St. Louis (1917), finishing at .209 with 120 hits and no home runs over 206 games. "Paddy" was simply the common Irish diminutive of Patrick. His enduring distinction: he was the last surviving player from the American League's first season of 1901, and the oldest living former major leaguer when he died in 1977 at age 97. A common (non-scarce) subject in the T206 set, he was never a Hall of Famer.
