About Hans Lobert
John Bernard "Hans" Lobert (1881-1968) earned a September 1903 tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates and went on to a 14-season National League career (1903, 1905-1917) as a stocky, bowlegged third baseman, also playing shortstop. After brief stops with Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs, he starred for the Cincinnati Reds (1906-1910) - the club shown on his T206 card - then the Philadelphia Phillies (1911-1914) and New York Giants (1915-1917). A lifetime .274 hitter with 1,252 hits, he batted over .300 four times and was among the era's premier baserunners, swiping 30-plus bases every year from 1907 through 1914 (41 in 1913, third in the NL) and 383 for his career. Renowned for his speed, he was clocked circling the bases in 13.8 seconds at a 1910 Cincinnati field day and beat Olympic champion Jim Thorpe in a 100-yard dash in 1913. Honus Wagner dubbed him "Hans Number Two" - they shared the German name Johannus, lived near each other, and bore a slight resemblance. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
