About Harry Davis
Harry Davis was the slugging first baseman and on-field brain of Connie Mack's early Philadelphia Athletics dynasty. A Philadelphia native (born 1873), he signed with Providence of the Eastern League in 1894 and reached the majors with the New York Giants in 1895, bouncing between the Giants, Pirates, Colonels and Senators before Mack made him the anchor of the Athletics from 1901 through 1911. Davis led the American League in home runs four straight seasons (1904-07) — the first player to accomplish that — and also topped the league in doubles (1902, 1905), runs and RBIs (1905). On July 10, 1901 he became the first AL player to hit for the cycle. He captained the club and starred on Philadelphia's pennant winners, earning World Series titles in 1905, 1910 and 1911 (batting .353 in the 1910 Series). Nicknamed "Jasper" by his schoolmates at Philadelphia's Girard College, Davis retired with a .277 average, 1,841 hits and 75 home runs, later coaching for Mack for many years. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
