About Jack Barry
John Joseph "Jack" Barry (1887-1961) came out of Holy Cross College, where he starred in the infield, and was signed by Connie Mack, joining the Philadelphia Athletics in June 1908. A slick, cerebral shortstop, Barry became the second man to join Mack's celebrated "$100,000 Infield" alongside second baseman Eddie Collins, third baseman Frank "Home Run" Baker, and first baseman Stuffy McInnis. Prized far more for his range, defense, and clutch play than his bat, Barry was a .243 career hitter who never topped .275 in a season, yet many contemporaries considered him the infield's most valuable member. He anchored Athletics teams that won American League pennants in 1910, 1911, 1913, and 1914 and World Series titles in 1910, 1911, and 1913. Traded to the Boston Red Sox after 1914, he won back-to-back championships in 1915 and 1916, becoming the first player to win four World Series. He served as Boston's player-manager in 1917, then had a legendary run as Holy Cross's baseball coach. As a "350 Only" subject, his T206 card is one of the tougher print runs.
