About Shad Barry
John Charles "Shad" Barry — also called "Jack" — was born October 27, 1878, in Newburgh, New York, and reached the majors out of Niagara University, debuting with the Washington Senators on May 30, 1899. A durable deadball-era utility man who played every position except catcher and pitcher, he spent ten big-league seasons (1899–1908) with seven clubs: Washington, the Boston Beaneaters, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the New York Giants. His finest year came in 1905, when he hit .324 in 125 games for Cincinnati; over 1,100 games he batted .267 with 1,073 hits, 128 doubles, 10 home runs, 391 RBIs, and 140 stolen bases. He was traded to the Cardinals for Homer Smoot in July 1906 and sold to the Giants in 1908. Barry closed his career in the minors, joining the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association in 1909–1910 — the team pictured on his T206 card — then playing and managing in the Pacific Coast and Northwestern leagues. He died November 27, 1936, in Los Angeles. Not a Hall of Famer, he is a common but genuine deadball veteran within the celebrated T206 set.
