About Stoney McGlynn

Ulysses Simpson Grant "Stoney" McGlynn (1872-1941), a right-handed pitcher from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was a legendary deadball-era workhorse who broke into pro ball at 15 as an emergency catcher and knocked around semipro and minor-league clubs for years before finally reaching the majors at 34. Debuting for the St. Louis Cardinals in September 1906, he threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Brooklyn on September 24, 1906 (called 1-1 for darkness). In his lone full big-league season, 1907, he went 14-25 with a 2.91 ERA and set National League records for innings (352-1/3), complete games (33), and batters faced, though he also led the league in losses. His MLB line was 17-33, 2.95 ERA over parts of 1906-1908. Nicknamed the "Iron Man of Baseball" for pitching both ends of doubleheaders and marathon extra-inning games, McGlynn moved to the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association (1909-1912), the team on this T206 card, where in 1909 he won 27 games and pitched roughly 446 innings. He is a common but genuine minor-league subject in the set.
