About Newt Randall

Newton John "Newt" Randall was a Canadian-born outfielder from New Lowell, Ontario, who broke into pro ball in 1902 with Cavalier, North Dakota, in the independent Northern League. His entire major-league career came in the 1907 National League season: he opened the year in the Chicago Cubs outfield but struggled against big-league pitching (.205 in 22 games), and on June 24 the defending champions traded him and Bill Sweeney to the Boston Doves for Del Howard. Randall played 73 games for Boston but hit only .213, finishing his lone MLB campaign at .211 with no home runs before returning to the minors for good. There he thrived, spending most of the next decade as a Milwaukee Brewers fan favorite in the American Association, where he reeled off a 23-game hitting streak in 1911 (then an AA record) and helped Milwaukee to pennants in 1913 and 1914. Milwaukee crowds knew him by the shout "Hey Newt," hollered in both praise and criticism. He is not a Hall of Famer, and as a career minor-leaguer he is one of the T206 set's common, affordable subjects rather than a scarce star.
