About Dan McGann
Dennis Lawrence "Dan" McGann began his pro career in 1891 with his hometown Shelbyville club in Kentucky's Bluegrass League, climbing through the minors until the Boston Beaneaters bought his contract in August 1896. A sturdy switch-hitting first baseman, he became one of the deadball era's finest at the position, playing for Boston, Baltimore, Brooklyn/Washington, and St. Louis before John McGraw brought him to the New York Giants in 1902. McGann batted .286 with 1,404 hits and 838 RBIs over his major-league career, hitting .292 while averaging 71 RBI and 29 steals across his first eight full seasons and leading NL first basemen in fielding percentage six times between 1899 and 1906. On May 27, 1904, he became the first player to steal five bases in a single game, and he anchored the Giants' 1904 and 1905 National League pennant winners, driving in four runs in the 1905 World Series triumph over the Athletics. He also led the NL in being hit by pitches six times. Released by Boston after 1908, McGann finished with Milwaukee of the American Association in 1909-1910 — the team shown on his T206 card. He died on December 13, 1910, in a Louisville hotel of a gunshot wound ruled a suicide; he was 38. He is not a Hall of Famer.
