About Joe McGinnity
Joseph Jerome "Iron Man" McGinnity (1871-1929) worked in an iron foundry between seasons and broke into pro ball with Montgomery of the Southern League in 1893, reaching the majors with the 1899 Baltimore Orioles. Over ten big-league seasons with Baltimore (NL and AL), the Brooklyn Superbas and the New York Giants, the durable right-hander won 246 games with a 2.66 ERA, led his league in wins five times, and paced the NL in ERA (1.61) in 1904, when he went 35-8. He famously pitched both ends of a doubleheader three times in August 1903, winning all six games. McGinnity anchored John McGraw's Giants to NL pennants in 1904 and 1905 and threw a shutout in the 1905 World Series, which the Giants swept from the Philadelphia Athletics. His "Iron Man" nickname arose from his foundry work but came to symbolize his legendary durability. After the majors he bought and player-managed the Newark Indians (the team on this T206 card) beginning in 1909, and kept pitching in the minors into his 50s. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946.
