About Larry Schlafly
Harry Fenton "Larry" Schlafly (1878-1919), an Ohio-born second baseman, turned pro in 1901 with Youngstown after semipro ball in Ashtabula. A patient, walk-drawing infielder, he reached the majors with the 1902 Chicago Cubs (then the Orphans) for 10 games, then resurfaced with the Washington Senators in 1906-1907. His 1906 season was his best: 123 games, a .246 average, 29 stolen bases, and an American League-leading 14 hit-by-pitches. Across four big-league seasons he batted .240 with 158 hits and a strong .349 on-base percentage. Chicago fans dubbed him "Shoo-fly," a play on his surname. After years bouncing through the high minors, Schlafly helped convert the Federal League into a third major league, becoming player-manager of the Buffalo Buffeds in 1914 and managing into 1915. His T206 card pictures him as a Newark (Eastern League) player, reflecting his long minor-league service; he was not a star, and the card is a common, affordable minor-leaguer in the set. He died of tuberculosis in 1919 at age 40.
