About Bill Hinchman

William White "Big Bill" Hinchman broke into pro ball in 1903 at Ilion of the New York State League alongside his brother Harry, reaching the majors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1905. An outfielder who also filled in at the infield corners, he moved to the Cleveland Naps in 1907 and it is a Cleveland pose that appears on this T206 card. After his big-league job dried up he starred for years with the Columbus Senators of the American Association before earning a return to the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1915, where he enjoyed his finest seasons — batting .307 in 1915 and .315 in 1916, the year he led the National League in triples with 16. Over 908 major-league games across parts of ten seasons he hit .261 with 793 hits. Standing near six feet at 190 pounds, he was nicknamed "Big Bill," a step up from the "Little Willie" of his youth; a disputed out call against him in a tight 1908 pennant race became known in the papers as "Hinchman's boner." He never reached the Hall of Fame, but stayed in the game for decades afterward as a Pirates scout and coach, signing future big-leaguers such as Rip Sewell, Cookie Lavagetto, and Billy Cox. He died in Columbus, Ohio, in 1963.
