About Harry Hinchman
Harry Sibley Hinchman (1878-1933) was a second baseman who learned the game on the Philadelphia sandlots, played semipro ball in the late 1890s, and turned professional in 1902 with the Ilion Typewriters of the New York State League. After stops in Wilkes-Barre and Binghamton, he reached the majors only briefly, appearing in 15 games for the Cleveland Naps in 1907 and batting .216 — his lone taste of the big leagues. A slap-hitting, quick-footed infielder who lacked power (and turned switch-hitter after a 1906 heel injury), Hinchman found his home in the American Association with the Toledo Mud Hens beginning in 1908, stealing 39 bases in 1909 and impressing owners enough to be named the club's player-manager for the 1911 season. He played 18 seasons in the minors and managed there into the 1930s, guiding Williamsport to back-to-back championships in 1923-24. In the T206 set he is one of the minor-league subjects (350-only series), and collectors note that his card famously carries the wrong photograph — the image is actually of Bud Sharpe, whose photo and Hinchman's were swapped. He is not a Hall of Famer.
