About Lucky Wright
William Simmons "Lucky" Wright (1880-1941) was a red-haired pitcher from Tontogany, Ohio, who reached the majors for a brief cup of coffee during the T206 era. He began in organized ball around 1897 with his hometown club and turned pro in 1902, bouncing through the Michigan State League and the Three-I League (Decatur, Bloomington) before starring for the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Commuters, where he went 22-18 in 1907. Cleveland gave him a look in 1909; he debuted April 18 against Detroit but appeared in just five games for the Naps, going 0-4 and never winning a big-league contest. Demoted to the American Association's Toledo Mud Hens - the team on his card - he won his first AA game on June 27, 1909, then hurt his arm and was finished. The "Lucky" nickname was ironic (a paper joked it confused "luck and science"); he was better known as "Deacon," and "Red" at home. He later painted houses and portraits and served on the village council. As a common Toledo minor-leaguer, his card is an affordable but genuine piece of the celebrated set.
