About Hooks Wiltse
George LeRoy "Hooks" Wiltse was a left-handed pitcher who broke in with Scranton of the Pennsylvania State League in 1902, starred for Troy in the New York State League, and had his contract sold to the New York Giants after a 20-8 season in 1903. He spent his prime with John McGraw's Giants (1904-1914) before a final year with the Federal League's Brooklyn Tip-Tops in 1915. Wiltse made perhaps the greatest debut in history, winning his first 12 decisions in 1904, and his finest year came in 1908, when he went 23-14 with a 2.24 ERA. On July 4, 1908, he threw a 10-inning no-hitter against Philadelphia, retiring the first 26 batters before an umpire's admitted error cost him a perfect game. Nicknamed "Hooks" for his slick fielding rather than his curve, he pitched behind Christy Mathewson on the 1905 World Champion Giants and finished 139-90 with a 2.47 ERA and 965 strikeouts over 12 seasons. He is not a Hall of Famer.
