About Fred Abbott

Fred Abbott — born Harry Frederick Winbigler on October 22, 1874, in Versailles, Ohio — was a deadball-era catcher who spent more than a decade in the minors before the majors ever called. He entered pro ball as a teenager around 1891 and toiled through independent Ohio clubs and the Southern Association's New Orleans Pelicans, from whom Cleveland purchased his contract before the 1903 season. Already 28, he debuted with the Cleveland Naps (then "Blues") in April 1903 and appeared in 77 games as a rookie, his busiest big-league year. He caught for Cleveland in 1903-1904, then was dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies for 1905. Across three MLB seasons he played 160 games, batting .209 with 107 hits, 1 home run, and 49 RBIs, working mostly behind the plate with a stint at first base. His finest baseball came afterward as the everyday catcher for the American Association's Toledo Mud Hens (roughly 1906-1910) — the team pictured on this card — where he hit as high as .331 in 1908, before closing out with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League. He ran a Toledo bowling alley and pool hall with teammate Harry Hinchman, settled in Los Angeles, and died there in 1935. As a Toledo minor-leaguer rather than a star, Abbott is one of the more obscure subjects in the T206 set.
