About Jerry Freeman
Frank Ellsworth "Jerry" Freeman, a big (6-foot-2, 220-pound) left-handed-hitting first baseman born in Placerville, California in 1879, spent most of his career grinding through the high minors of the deadball era. He reached the majors with the Washington Senators, appearing in 173 big-league games across 1908 and 1909 and batting .245 with 142 hits, 48 RBIs and a single home run. As Washington's regular first baseman in 1908 he played nearly the full schedule, but his glovework was rough — his 41 errors led the American League by a wide margin. Freeman spent the remainder of 1909 and all of 1910 with the Toledo Mud Hens of the American Association, the team pictured on his T206 card. Over a long minor-league career, largely in the Pacific Coast League and American Association, he hit roughly .280 with more than 1,000 hits. He was sometimes called "Buck," reportedly after the earlier big-league star Buck Freeman. A minor-league subject in the "350 Only" print run, Freeman is one of the set's more common commons rather than a scarce or Hall of Fame name.
