About Bill Lattimore
William Hershel "Slothful Bill" Lattimore (1884-1919) was a left-handed pitcher who signed out of Texas with the Class D Paris Parasites of the North Texas League in 1905. After stops with South McAlester and Webb City, he starred for the Toledo Mud Hens of the American Association, going 13-8 in 1907, which made him the most coveted man in that September's minor-league draft — reportedly all sixteen major-league clubs listed him before Cleveland won the lottery. His big-league career was brief: in 1908 he appeared in just four games for the Cleveland Naps, finishing 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA over 24 innings, though his second start was a six-hit shutout of the Chicago White Sox, after which he visited President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Returned to the minors, he threw a no-hitter for the Fort Worth Panthers in 1910. The deliberate "Slothful Bill" nickname came from writers mocking his slow pitching pace; teammates more often called him "Tex." He left baseball to run a clothing store in Paris, Texas, and died of tuberculosis at 35. His T206 card pictures him with Toledo.
