About Clyde Engle
Arthur Clyde Engle, born in 1884 in Dayton, Ohio, entered pro ball in 1903 as a pitcher with Nashville of the Southern Association before reinventing himself as a versatile outfielder and infielder in the minors at Augusta and Newark. He reached the majors with the New York Highlanders (today's Yankees) in 1909, playing 135 games and batting .278 with 71 RBIs as a rookie left fielder. Sold to the Boston Red Sox in 1910, the durable utilityman spent four-plus seasons there and was a member of Boston's 1912 World Series champions, his best year coming in 1913 at .289. He later jumped to Buffalo of the Federal League (1915) and closed his big-league career with Cleveland in 1916, finishing at .265 with 748 hits and 12 home runs. The stocky 5-foot-10, 190-pounder was nicknamed "Hack" for his resemblance to strongman-wrestler Georg Hackenschmidt. Engle is best remembered for one at-bat: pinch-hitting in the deciding Game 8 of the 1912 Series, he lofted the routine fly that Fred Snodgrass dropped — the famous "$30,000 muff" that helped Boston rally to the title. He never reached the Hall of Fame and died in 1939.
