About James Lafitte
Jim Lafitte — full name James Arnauld Lafitte, born January 6, 1880 in New Orleans and died September 29, 1964 in Houston — was a career minor-league catcher and manager, and never appeared in a major-league game. A New Orleans city firefighter before he turned to the diamond, he spent many years playing and managing in the Southern minor leagues, and it was as a backstop for the Macon Peaches of the Class C South Atlantic ("Sally") League that he earned his place in the T206 set. Baseball-Reference carries him only in its minor-league register (id lafitt002jam), confirming he was strictly a bush-league man. He is best remembered today as the older brother of Ed "Doc" Lafitte, the dentist-pitcher who reached the Detroit Tigers and later threw a no-hitter in the Federal League; the brothers occasionally formed a battery on New Orleans semipro clubs. Lafitte's card belongs to the scarce Southern Leaguers subset — printed only in 1909-1910 and among the toughest and most sought-after portions of the T206 White Border set for collectors chasing a complete run.
