1933 Goudey #182 Andy High

About Andy High
Andy High (b. November 21, 1897, Ava, Illinois; d. February 22, 1981) broke into the majors in 1922 with the Brooklyn Robins and spent 13 seasons as an infielder, mostly at third base, for Brooklyn (1922-25), the Boston Braves (1925-27), the St. Louis Cardinals (1928-31), the Cincinnati Reds (1932-33), and the Philadelphia Phillies (1934). At 5'6" and 155 pounds, he was nicknamed "Knee High" for his size and, more lastingly, "Handy Andy" for his clutch hitting during the Cardinals' pennant-winning runs of 1928, 1930, and 1931. He reached the World Series three times and batted .294 (10-for-34) in Series play, highlighted by a three-hit Game Seven in the 1931 Series as St. Louis beat Connie Mack's Athletics for the title. Career totals: a .284 average with 1,250 hits, 44 home runs, and 482 RBI. By 1933 his big-league days were ending — released by Cincinnati in July after hitting .209 in 24 games, he signed with the Columbus Red Birds of the American Association, the Cardinals' top farm club depicted on his Goudey card, and hit .340 in 20 games there. High went on to manage in the minors, coach for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1937-38), and serve 25 years as the Dodgers' scouting director through 1963, a tenure spanning nine NL pennants and three World Series championships.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Andy High card?
It is card #182 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Andy High with the Columbus Red Birds.
Is the 1933 Goudey Andy High #182 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
