About Curly Ogden

Warren Harvey "Curly" Ogden — nicknamed for his hair since childhood — was a right-handed pitcher out of Swarthmore College, where he captained the baseball team. Connie Mack signed him after the 1922 season and brought him straight to the majors, debuting with the Philadelphia Athletics that July. Washington claimed him off waivers in May 1924, and he went 9-5 down the stretch as the Senators nosed out the Yankees for the pennant. Ogden's signature moment came in Game 7 of the 1924 World Series: manager Bucky Harris started him as a decoy to lure John McGraw's Giants into loading up on left-handed hitters, and Ogden was pulled for lefty George Mogridge after facing just two batters — Washington went on to win the Series in 12 innings. Over five big-league seasons (1922-1926, A's and Senators) he went 18-19 with a 3.79 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 93 games. After leaving the majors he pitched several more seasons in the high minors — Birmingham, Buffalo, Toledo, Toronto, Jersey City, and Montreal — his best year coming with Buffalo in 1928 (21 wins, 3.09 ERA). His 1933 Goudey card, issued while he pitched for the International League's Montreal Royals, captures him as a well-traveled veteran near the end of that long pitching career.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Curly Ogden card?

It is card #174 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Curly Ogden with the Montreal Royals.

Is the 1933 Goudey Curly Ogden #174 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
