About Earl Clark
Bailey Earl Clark was born November 6, 1907, in Washington, D.C., and broke into the majors with the Boston Braves on August 17, 1927, at age 19. A right-handed-hitting outfielder capable of playing all three garden spots, he settled into semi-regular duty in Boston from 1928 through 1930, posting his best season in 1929 with a .315 average, 88 hits, and 30 RBI in 84 games. On May 10, 1929, Clark set the major-league record for putouts by an outfielder in a nine-inning game with twelve — a mark later equaled by Lyman Bostock (1977) and Jacoby Ellsbury (2009) but never broken. Playing time thinned after 1930, and in 1933, following a brief seven-game stint with the Braves, Clark was sent to the Albany Senators of the International League, which is the club shown on his 1933 Goudey card. He returned to the majors for a final look with the St. Louis Browns in 1934 before his career ended. Over eight big-league seasons Clark hit .291 with 240 hits, 4 home runs, and 81 RBI in 293 games. He died young, at 30, on January 16, 1938, in Washington, D.C., when his automobile collided with a streetcar.
