About Hod Lisenbee
Horace Milton "Hod" Lisenbee (born September 23, 1898, Clarksville, Tennessee; died November 14, 1987) was a right-handed pitcher who didn't take up organized ball until his twenties, breaking in with Brookhaven of the Cotton States League in 1924. He reached the majors with the Washington Senators in 1927 and had a standout rookie year, going 18-9 and leading the American League with four shutouts; that season he struck out Babe Ruth on three straight pitches in one at-bat, though Ruth also touched him up for his 58th home run of the year. Lisenbee pitched for Washington, Boston, and Philadelphia before slipping to the minors, and by 1933, the card year, he was bouncing between the Buffalo Bisons, Birmingham Barons, and Jersey City Skeeters. He kept pitching in the minors for years, throwing a no-hitter for Syracuse in 1944 at age 45, then returned to Cincinnati in 1945 at 46 as the last player born in the 1800s to appear in a major-league game. Career totals: 37-58, 4.81 ERA, 253 strikeouts.
