Roy Johnson - 1933 Goudey #8
1933 Goudey #8 Roy Johnson
Low number: this card was printed on press sheets 1-2 (#1-40 plus #45-52), which saw shorter distribution than the rest of the 1933 run — low numbers are noticeably scarcer.

About Roy Johnson
Roy Cleveland Johnson, part Cherokee, was born February 23, 1903, in Pryor, Oklahoma, and grew up playing sandlot and semipro ball around Tacoma, Washington. He broke into pro ball with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, was farmed to Class-C Idaho Falls in 1926, and reached the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 1929. That rookie season was historic: the left-handed-batting outfielder became the first rookie in major-league history to collect 200 hits (finishing with 201) and led the American League with 45 doubles. He led the AL again with 19 triples in 1931, then was traded to the Boston Red Sox in mid-1932 - the team pictured on this card - where he had his finest season in 1934, hitting .320 with 119 RBI. Johnson went on to play for the New York Yankees, winning the 1936 World Series, and closed his career with the Boston Bees in 1937-38. Over ten major-league seasons he batted .296 with 1,292 hits, 58 home runs, roughly 556 RBI, and 135 stolen bases. Period newspapers dubbed him "Cherokee Roy Johnson" for his heritage; his younger brother, "Indian Bob" Johnson, also became a big-league outfielder. Roy Johnson died September 10, 1973, in Tacoma, and was later inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County and Washington State Sports Halls of Fame.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Roy Johnson card?
It is card #8 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Roy Johnson with the Boston Red Sox.
Is the 1933 Goudey Roy Johnson #8 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
