About Bernie Friberg

Bernard "Barney" Friberg was a versatile infielder-outfielder from Lynn, Massachusetts, whose path to the majors skipped the minors entirely: a Lynn playground supervisor's tip connected the 19-year-old semipro to Cubs manager Fred Mitchell, and Chicago signed him straight onto its 1919 roster. Friberg spent parts of six seasons with the Cubs (1919-1924), shifting from the outfield to third base in 1923 and posting his best power year that season (.318, 12 homers, 88 RBI); he was named Cubs field captain in 1924 at just 24. Claimed by the Phillies in mid-1925, he manned nearly every position on the diamond over eight seasons in Philadelphia, was named team captain, and hit a career-high .341 in 1930. His 1933 Goudey card catches him back home with the Red Sox, where he played 17 games that year before finishing his career in the minors. Over 1,299 big-league games he batted .281 with 1,170 hits, 38 home runs and 471 RBI, without ever reaching a World Series.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Bernie Friberg card?

It is card #105 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Bernie Friberg with the Boston Red Sox.

Is the 1933 Goudey Bernie Friberg #105 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
