About Ted Lyons
Ted Lyons was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire 21-year major-league career with the Chicago White Sox. Born in 1900 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he never pitched an inning of minor-league ball: the White Sox signed him straight off the Baylor University campus in June 1923, and he debuted in relief that July. Lyons became a control artist built around a sailing fastball, reinventing himself with a slow curve and knuckleball after a 1931 shoulder injury. He threw a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox on August 21, 1926, and led the American League in wins and complete games multiple times over a career that finished 260-230 with a 3.67 ERA and 1,073 strikeouts. Beginning in 1935, manager Jimmy Dykes made him the club's once-a-week "Sunday" starter, giving rise to his enduring nickname, "Sunday Teddy" — Lyons himself joked it fit since his mother had forbidden him from playing ball on Sundays as a boy. He capped his playing days in 1942, at age 41, by completing all 20 of his starts with a 2.10 ERA before enlisting in the Marine Corps for World War II; he later managed the White Sox (1946-48). Lyons was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, and he still holds White Sox career records for wins, innings pitched, and complete games.
