About Evar Swanson
Evar Swanson (born Ernest Evar Swanson, October 15, 1902, in DeKalb, Illinois; died July 17, 1973, in Galesburg, Illinois) reached the majors after a remarkable multi-sport career. At Lombard College in Galesburg he lettered in baseball, basketball, football, and track, and he went on to play professional football from 1923-28 with the Milwaukee Badgers, Rock Island Independents, and Chicago Cardinals. He broke into pro baseball with Moline before being sold to the Pacific Coast League's Vernon Tigers, where he was converted into a switch-hitter. Swanson debuted in the majors as a center fielder with the Cincinnati Reds (1929-30), spent 1931 back in the minors with Columbus of the American Association, then returned to the big leagues with the Chicago White Sox (1932-34) - the club pictured on his 1933 Goudey card. Over five major-league seasons he hit .303 with 573 hits and 69 stolen bases, stealing 33 bases as a rookie in 1929 and scoring 102 runs in 1933. He is best remembered for his legendary speed: on September 21, 1931, in a field-day exhibition at Columbus's Neil Park, he circled the bases in 13.2 seconds, a time still cited among the fastest ever recorded. After baseball, Swanson returned to Galesburg, ran a grocery store, and served as the city's postmaster from 1958 to 1972.
