1933 Goudey #65 Milton Gaston

About Milton Gaston
Nathaniel Milton "Milt" Gaston was born January 27, 1896, in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, and broke into pro ball after impressing scouts as a pitcher for the semipro Paterson Silk Sox, signing with the New York Yankees on November 1, 1923, for a $5,000 bonus plus a $5,000 contract. The right-hander debuted with the Yankees in 1924 as a reliever, then pitched for the St. Louis Browns (1925-26), Washington Senators (1928), Boston Red Sox (1929-31), and finally the Chicago White Sox (1932-34), the club shown on his 1933 Goudey card. Across 11 big-league seasons he went 97-164 with a 4.55 ERA and 615 strikeouts, often drawing tough assignments for second-division clubs; his best year came in 1925 (15-14), and in 1930 he led the American League in losses (13-20) while still posting the best ERA on a weak Red Sox staff. In 1929 he and his older brother Alex Gaston, a catcher, briefly became big-league battery mates in Boston after having faced each other as opponents in 1926. By 1933 he was in the twilight of his career with Chicago, going 8-12 that season. Gaston lived to age 100, dying April 26, 1996, in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Milton Gaston card?
It is card #65 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Milton Gaston with the Chicago White Sox.
Is the 1933 Goudey Milton Gaston #65 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
