About Mule Haas
George William "Mule" Haas (1903-1974) broke into pro ball with the Pirates organization and reached the majors in 1925; a standout .316 season for Birmingham of the Southern Association that year earned him his nickname, after sportswriter Zip Newman said Haas's bat "packed the kick of a mule." Connie Mack bought him for the Athletics in 1928, and the left-handed-hitting center fielder became a key piece of Mack's championship club, hitting a career-high .323 with 16 home runs and 82 RBI in 1929. That October, in the World Series against the Cubs, Haas delivered a three-run inside-the-park homer during Philadelphia's ten-run Game 4 rally, then a game-tying, ninth-inning two-run homer in Game 5 that set up Bing Miller's Series-winning double; the Athletics repeated as champions in 1930. Haas joined the White Sox in 1933, his card year, and led the American League in sacrifice hits six times from 1930-1936. Over 12 seasons he batted .292 with 1,257 hits, 43 home runs, and 496 RBI, later gaining fame as one of baseball's sharpest bench jockeys.
