About Howie Fox
Howard Francis "Howie" Fox was a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher, born March 1, 1921, in Coburg, Oregon, who played baseball and basketball at the University of Oregon. A Reds scout discovered him in Oregon's semipro ranks, and Cincinnati signed him in 1943; he broke in with the Birmingham Barons before reaching the majors. Standing 6-foot-3 and known for a sharp curveball, Fox pitched nine big-league seasons (1944-1954) for the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Baltimore Orioles. His card here shows him with the Phillies, the team he pitched for in 1952. Toiling mostly for weak Reds clubs, he finished 43-72 with a 4.33 ERA and 342 strikeouts over 248 games; his best year was 1950 (11-8), though he also led the majors in losses in 1949 at 6-19. His story ended tragically: in October 1955, while pitching for the San Antonio Missions, Fox was fatally stabbed at age 34 trying to eject troublemakers from a tavern he owned. He was later inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
