About Willie Jones

Willie Edward "Puddin' Head" Jones was a right-handed third baseman signed by the Phillies out of semipro ball in South Carolina in 1946, reaching the majors in 1947 after a big season at Class B Terre Haute. He spent 13 of his 15 seasons (1947-1959) in Philadelphia before finishing with Cleveland (1959) and Cincinnati (1959-1961), batting .258 with 1,502 hits, 190 home runs, and 812 RBI over 1,691 games. A two-time NL All-Star (1950, 1951), Jones was the finest defensive third baseman in the National League of the 1950s, leading league third basemen in fielding percentage six times and in putouts for seven seasons. His peak came with the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the pennant-winning Phillies, when he set career highs with 25 homers, 88 RBI, 100 runs, and 163 hits; the Yankees swept that World Series 4-0, but Jones hit .286. Nicknamed "Puddin' Head" as a boy after a popular 1930s song, he was rated Philadelphia's greatest third baseman before Mike Schmidt. He died of cancer in 1983 at age 58.

Designations, variations & errors

Double Print

Marked DP. Roughly 50% more of these cards were printed than their neighbors (the hobby calls it 'double-printed'), so they are the most plentiful cards in the set. TCDB flags 103 of them, concentrated in the low series. Five cards normally in the low run - #94, #107, #131, #145 and #156 - were also printed on the more-plentiful #166-220 sheet. A print-quantity designation, not an error or a separate card.

White-text biography

A minor printing variation: on some copies the back biography is printed in white text, on others in black text. Catalogued by TCDB (and noted by price guides for the series-2 range) but considered a minor variation, not a headline.
