About this card

This unnumbered insert is a contest ad card from the 1958 Topps issue, made to promote the 1958 All-Star Game. That game, the 25th midsummer classic, was played on July 8, 1958, at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, home of the Orioles, and the American League won 4-3 in front of 48,829 fans, with Early Wynn the winning pitcher. Vice President Richard Nixon threw the ceremonial first pitch, and NBC carried the game on television and radio. Willie Mays got the first hit, and it was the first All-Star Game without an extra-base hit. The American League took the lead in the sixth after an error by Frank Thomas led to a single by Gil McDougald. With no card number, the insert sits outside the numbered checklist of 494 cards running 1-495. The same set introduced the Sport Magazine All-Star Selection series at #475-495.
