1961-62 Fleer Basketball #1 Al Attles
1961-62 Fleer Basketball #1 Al Attles

About this card
The 1961-62 Fleer Basketball Al Attles is card #1 of 66, in the set's Portrait subset (#1-44, the numbered portraits). It is the recognized Rookie Card for Al Attles. It is one of the set's star key cards. It is one of the condition-sensitive early cards (#1-6) at the edge of the press sheet, where centering and clean edges are especially tough. 1961-62 Fleer was Fleer's only major NBA issue between the 1957-58 Topps set and the 1969-70 Topps era - 66 cards split into 44 Portrait cards (#1-44) and 22 In Action cards (#45-66), every one single-printed with no short prints.
About Al Attles
Alvin "Al" Attles Jr. reached the NBA from North Carolina A&T, selected by the Philadelphia Warriors in the fifth round (39th overall) of the 1960 NBA Draft — the same draft that brought Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Lenny Wilkens into the league. A 6-foot guard nicknamed "The Destroyer" for his hard-nosed defense, Attles spent his entire 11-year playing career (1960–71) with the Warriors, moving with the franchise from Philadelphia to San Francisco in 1962 and averaging 8.9 points per game. He later became the team's player-coach and, as head coach, led the underdog Warriors to the 1975 NBA championship with a four-game sweep of the Washington Bullets, becoming one of the first Black head coaches to win an NBA title. Attles was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor in 2019. Fittingly, he holds card #1 in the 1961-62 Fleer set — his rookie card — opening a career spent almost entirely with one franchise.

How rare is the 1961-62 Fleer Al Attles in high grade?
Condition-scarce. PSA has graded about 497 copies and SGC about 235, yet only 0 have reached PSA 10 and 22 are PSA 9.
