1961-62 Fleer Basketball #2 Paul Arizin
1961-62 Fleer Basketball #2 Paul Arizin

About this card
The 1961-62 Fleer Basketball Paul Arizin is card #2 of 66, in the set's Portrait subset (#1-44, the numbered portraits). Paul Arizin was already an established star by 1961-62, so this is a key veteran card rather than a rookie. It is one of the set's star key cards. It is one of the condition-sensitive early cards (#1-6) at the edge of the press sheet, where centering and clean edges are especially tough. 1961-62 Fleer was Fleer's only major NBA issue between the 1957-58 Topps set and the 1969-70 Topps era - 66 cards split into 44 Portrait cards (#1-44) and 22 In Action cards (#45-66), every one single-printed with no short prints.
About Paul Arizin
Paul Arizin, celebrated for a textbook jump shot in an era when the set shot still ruled, starred at Villanova University before the Philadelphia Warriors made him a territorial pick in the 1950 NBA Draft. A 6-foot-4 forward, Arizin played his entire NBA career with the Warriors (1950–62), interrupted only by two seasons of U.S. Marine Corps service during the Korean War. He was a 10-time NBA All-Star, twice led the league in scoring (1952 and 1957), earned the 1952 All-Star Game MVP, and helped Philadelphia win the 1956 NBA championship. Arizin retired with 16,266 points — third-most in league history at the time — and a 22.8-point career average, later earning a place on the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team. He entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. By this 1961-62 Fleer issue — his final season, and not a rookie card — Arizin was a veteran scoring star closing out a decorated career.
