The story on this card
Topps gave card 50 to the American League's 1960 strikeout leaders, and names four men: Jim Bunning and Frank Lary, Detroit Tigers teammates that season, plus Pedro Ramos of the 1960 Washington Senators and Early Wynn of the Chicago White Sox. Bunning topped the league with 201, the only AL total past 200 that year and, to the strikeout, the same number that had won him the 1959 crown as well. Ramos was second at 160, Wynn third at 158 in a two-strikeout gap, Lary fourth at 149. The 1961 set was the first Topps issue to carry a League Leaders subset; card 49 is the National League companion.
Jim Bunning was a hard-throwing right-hander who threw no-hitters in both leagues, including a 1964 perfect game for the Phillies, and later served as a US Senator from Kentucky. Pedro Ramos was a Cuban-born right-hander who logged six straight 200-inning seasons and led the American League in losses four years running, then remade himself as a reliever and saved eight games for the pennant-winning 1964 Yankees. Early Wynn was a hard-nosed 300-game winner who anchored Cleveland's great 1950s rotation and then won the 1959 Cy Young Award pitching the White Sox to the pennant, reaching 300 wins in 1963 before his 1972 Hall of Fame induction. Frank Lary - Detroit right-hander they called the Yankee Killer, 27-10 against New York from 1955 through 1961. Three-time All-Star, 1961 Gold Glove winner, and a 23-9 ace for the 101-win Tigers that same summer.
