1961 Topps #17 Checklist 1-88 (1st Series)

About this card
The seven checklist cards (#17, 98, 189, 273, 361, 437, 516) were the first numbered checklists in a Topps set. The first was printed with the series it lists; each later checklist was printed with the series before the one it lists.
The story on this card
Card 17 is the first of seven numbered checklists in the 1961 Topps set, listing the 88 cards of the opening series, Dick Groat at number 1 through Richie Ashburn at number 88, with Roger Maris at number 2 the year he hit 61 homers and Ron Santo's rookie card at number 35. This was the first Topps set to number its checklists into the set; earlier lists rode on the backs of team cards. Every 1961 checklist front sets the grid beside a small action photo under CHECK LIST lettering, and collectors have pegged the batter here as the Pirates' Dick Stuart at Wrigley Field. They were made to be marked up, so unmarked copies are the hard part.
