About this card

The sixteen team cards pair a club photo with the previous season's record. Neither 1961 expansion club, the Los Angeles Angels or the new Washington Senators, has one.

The story on this card

Card #297 pictures the 1960 Kansas City Athletics, who went 58-96 under manager Bob Elliott and finished eighth and last in the American League's final season as an eight-team circuit, 39 games behind the pennant-winning Yankees. A total of 774,944 fans passed through Municipal Stadium that year. Owner Arnold Johnson died that March, and Charlie Finley bought the club from his estate in December 1960. The roster included two future Hall of Famers, both honored for their later work as managers: outfielder Whitey Herzog and Dick Williams, who hit .288 with 12 home runs and 65 RBI. The card belongs to the fourth print series.
