The story on this card

It is the National League Batting Leaders card in the 1961 Topps League Leaders subset, number 41 in the first print series. The race it records was decided by two points. Dick Groat of the Pirates took the crown at .325 and the National League Most Valuable Player award, this after a Lew Burdette pitch caught his left wrist on September 6 and kept him out until late in the month, while Pittsburgh clinched the pennant without him. Norm Larker, the Dodgers' first baseman, was second at .323, Willie Mays of the Giants third at .319 and Groat's teammate Roberto Clemente fourth at .314 - the four Topps put on the card, Ken Boyer's .304 just missing.

Dick Groat was Pittsburgh's shortstop and table-setter, the 1960 National League batting champion and MVP, a contact hitter who anchored two World Series winners - the 1960 Pirates and the 1964 Cardinals - before finishing up with the Phillies and Giants. Norm Larker was a Dodgers first baseman who hit .323 in 1960, finishing runner-up for the National League batting title and earning his only All-Star selection before later playing for Houston, Milwaukee and San Francisco. Willie Mays was the Say Hey Kid, the five-tool center fielder of the New York and San Francisco Giants: Rookie of the Year in 1951, Most Valuable Player in 1954 and 1965, twelve straight Gold Gloves, 660 home runs, Hall of Fame in 1979. Pittsburgh's right fielder for eighteen seasons, Roberto Clemente won four National League batting titles and twelve straight Gold Gloves, was the 1966 NL Most Valuable Player and the 1971 World Series MVP, and died flying earthquake relief in 1972.
