The story on this card
Card 228 is the New York Yankees team card, a third-series entry looking back at 1960. Casey Stengel's club went 97-57 -- 55-22 of it at Yankee Stadium -- and finished eight games clear of Baltimore for its 25th pennant. Then came a strange World Series: the Yankees outscored Pittsburgh 55-27 and got two complete-game shutouts from Whitey Ford, yet lost in seven when Bill Mazeroski homered in the ninth of Game 7. Roger Maris was AL MVP, Mickey Mantle led the league with 40 home runs, and Elston Howard took over as everyday catcher while Yogi Berra split time between the outfield and backup work. Berra, Ford, Mantle and Stengel all reached Cooperstown; Stengel, 70, was dismissed shortly after the defeat.
