1961 Topps #491 Philadelphia Phillies Team
Hall of Famers on the 1960 Philadelphia Phillies roster: Robin Roberts.

About this card
The sixteen team cards pair a club photo with the previous season's record. Neither 1961 expansion club, the Los Angeles Angels or the new Washington Senators, has one.
The story on this card
The Phillies pictured here had just finished last: 59-95 in 1960, eighth in the eight-team National League and 36 games behind the World Series champion Pirates. The year opened in chaos. Eddie Sawyer, who had managed the 1950 Whiz Kids to a pennant, quit after a 9-4 opening-day loss at Cincinnati, saying he was 49 and wanted to live to be 50. Coach Andy Cohen ran one game, a ten-inning win over Milwaukee, then 34-year-old Gene Mauch took over and stayed nine years. Robin Roberts took the loss in that opener and was the roster's lone future Hall of Famer at Connie Mack Stadium, where Johnny Callison, Tony Taylor and Tony Gonzalez were arriving. Card 491 is a sixth-series team card.
