About this card

The sixteen team cards pair a club photo with the previous season's record. Neither 1961 expansion club, the Los Angeles Angels or the new Washington Senators, has one.

The story on this card

Card 167 is the San Francisco Giants team card from the second series of the 1961 Topps set, reporting on the 1960 season. That year the club left Seals Stadium for brand-new Candlestick Park and finished fifth in the National League at 79-75, sixteen games behind the champion Pittsburgh Pirates, under Bill Rigney and then Tom Sheehan. Four future Hall of Famers were on that roster: Willie Mays in center, Orlando Cepeda shifted to left field, Willie McCovey at first base after his 1959 Rookie of the Year season, and Juan Marichal, who debuted that July with a one-hitter. Eddie Bressoud, Jim Davenport and 18-game winner Sam Jones filled out the club. The new park yielded only 77 home runs all season, so the fences came in for 1961; the club's 62 triples remain a San Francisco-era high.
