The story on this card

Card 288 in the 1963 Topps set is the Chicago White Sox team card, part of print series 4. The card reports the 1962 season, when Al Lopez's club went 85-77 and finished fifth in the American League, eleven games behind the pennant-winning New York Yankees. The infield was anchored by Luis Aparicio and Nellie Fox up the middle, a double-play pairing that had already made the club one of the league's best defensive units. Early Wynn, a 300-game winner by career's end, was still on the pitching staff that season. Lopez, later elected to the Hall of Fame as a manager, had built the club into a consistent contender on pitching and defense. The roster photo captures a team that, despite the fifth-place finish, had the pieces in place for the improved second-place run that followed the next year.
