The story on this card

Card 397, from the 1963 Topps fifth series, is the Kansas City Athletics team card - a full-squad photo backed by the club's story, not any one player's. It reports the 1962 season, the club's eighth in Kansas City: a ninth-place finish in the American League at 72-90, twenty-four games behind the pennant-winning New York Yankees, and last in the league at the gate. Charles O. Finley owned the club; Hank Bauer managed it from Municipal Stadium. That roster mixed veterans like catcher Haywood Sullivan and infielder Dick Howser with young arms such as Diego Segui, John Wyatt and Orlando Pena, plus infielder Ed Charles, acquired from Milwaukee that prior winter, now the regular third baseman. No Hall of Famer sat on the roster; the card is a rebuilding second-division club still years from contention.
