The story on this card
Card #39 in the 1963 Topps set is the Los Angeles Angels team card, an ordinary number in print series 1. The photo reports the club's 1962 season, its first playing home games at Chavez Ravine, where owner Gene Autry's still-young franchise went 86-76, good for third place in the American League, ten games behind the pennant-winning Yankees. Manager Bill Rigney and general manager Fred Haney had built a roster that delivered the first no-hitter in franchise history that May, Bo Belinsky blanking the Orioles at the new ballpark. The Angels' quick rise made them one of the rare expansion clubs to post a winning record so early, and this small team photo captures that squad heading into 1963.
