1963 Topps #131 Washington Senators

About this card
The twenty team cards, one for every 1963 club, are the only horizontal fronts in the set. Every franchise has one, including the Houston Colt .45's, the Los Angeles Angels and the expansion Washington Senators.
The story on this card
This team card reports the 1962 season, the club's first at D.C. Stadium. Washington finished tenth and last in the American League at 60-101, 35.5 games behind the pennant-winning Yankees, with a 27-53 mark at home and 33-48-1 on the road. Mickey Vernon managed the club in his second season at the helm. The roster panel lines up the players and coaches from that losing year, including outfielder Jimmy Piersall, acquired from Cleveland in an October 1961 trade, and infielder Dale Long. Card 131 is part of Topps' second series for 1963, a plain team-photo subset issue. It slots into the set alongside the other American and National League team cards printed at that stage of the run.
