About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

Card #146 is Tommy John's rookie card, a two-player Rookie Stars slot in the second series that he shares with fellow Cleveland Indian Bob Chance. He had already made six September appearances in 1963, but 1964 was his first real look, and it opened well: a shutout of the Baltimore Orioles on May 3 for his first major league win. He then lost eight straight decisions and went to Triple-A in July, his control undone by the slider pitching coach Early Wynn wanted him throwing. Left-hander who won 288 games across a record-tying 26 seasons, the second most of any pitcher since 1900 outside Cooperstown, and whose 1974 elbow reconstruction gave baseball the term Tommy John surgery.

Card #146 is a second-print-series Rookie Stars pairing with Tommy John, whose rookie card it is - one of the key rookie cards of the 1964 set. The season behind it was his best: .279 with 14 home runs and 75 runs batted in over 120 games, 81 at first base and 31 in the outfield, leading the Indians in average and second on the club in RBIs. He homered off a lefty and a righty in one June win over Washington and drove in five against first-place Baltimore in July. Cleveland traded him that December. Bob Chance - a powerful left-handed first baseman whose 1964 rookie year with Cleveland was the peak of a six-season career across three American League clubs, and who hit far better in the minor leagues than he ever managed in the majors.
