About this card

Nineteen team cards cover twenty clubs - Houston has none. Three of them, #303 Indians, #326 Braves and #404 Pirates, were printed with and without a dot between the standings line and the league name in the band at the foot of the front, and both states are tracked here.

The story on this card

Card #492 in the 1966 Topps set is the Kansas City Athletics team card, from the set's sixth print series. It reports the club's dismal 1965 season: a last-place 59-103 finish, 43 games behind Minnesota, played out at Municipal Stadium. Owner Charlie Finley kept headlines coming with ballpark promotions and the first pick in that June's inaugural amateur draft, Rick Monday. Two future Hall of Famers were part of that roster. Catfish Hunter, in his rookie season, went 8-8 with a 4.26 ERA and 82 strikeouts over 32 games. Satchel Paige, a Negro Leagues legend then in his late fifties, made one appearance that September against Boston, throwing three scoreless innings before a boisterous ovation. Shortstop Bert Campaneris hit .270, catcher Billy Bryan drove in 51 runs, and first baseman Ken Harrelson added 23 home runs.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
